The other day I found a good post from Seth Godin on a way for very small businesses to get an online presence, quickly and cheaply. I don’t agree with the specifics of his method necessarily – it’s quite heavily weighted towards Squidoo lenses. But it had the desired effect which was to make me think about how it doesn’t have to be hard for a very small business to have a decent online presence – they can set it up themselves very quickly. What counts is having a presence in the first place. He recommends Typepad, which you pay for, but there’s plenty of good, easy to use, free blog providers – Tumblr, Blogger or WordPress to name a few.

If you’re a niche business in a specific area then you should be on Google Maps. It can be very easy to garner top positions in Google search results by setting up a Google Places profile. An even if you’ve got loads of local competition you still need to be on there – the other guy most probably is. And if you really want to use it to your advantage then ask your customers to leave you a review there. It’s a high profile place for your potential customers to read about what your existing customers think. You can also copy the best reviews to your blog/website/facebook page.

The groovy little arts/empty spaces collective I’ve co-founded have secured temporary use of two stalls at Brighton’s Open Market prior to the major developments planned. This is brilliant news for us and in some ways a long time coming!

This is our pilot project in the realms of transforming unused city space for creative and community regenerative purposes. We need it to transform these spaces fast and we need them to pull some new life into this wonderful market space, to boost the income of the present stallholders who are stuggling due to the impending development and therefore emptying spaces.

So we need people with ideas for utilising the 2 stalls (which are garage size indoor spaces), as well as ideas that spill into the open market public areas (roaming dance/theatre/performance or anything you can think of). We’re after proposals for anything from art projects and performances to volunteering and community projects. If you think you have a good idea for a project please fill out the form on our projects page on our website.

We’re also putting a call out for artists and makers to have a stall at our artists market. You can do 1 day or up to 2 weeks. Have a read of our Artists/Makers Market page on our site and fill out the short application form if you’re interested.

A couple of preview images of my latest work.

The work is based around ideas of repetition and deconstruction. Straight lines are scored into the painted paper with a knife tip, creating a strong white line against a dark background. The simple yet repetitive act of ruling hundreds of lines echoes the process of meditation – out of a a simple act repeated can arise something beautiful.

With each line the painted paper is partly stripped back to bare paper, or scored even deeper, revealing the structure of the paper. It could also be said that in this way meditation has an effect on the psyche/soul.

Maybe i spoke too soon. Just when you think you’re efforts will amount to nowt, along comes life to say “hang on buddy, you don’t know anything about how this stuff works”.
The way I see it is that all our efforts are washing around in the great efforts washing machine/lotto ball tumbler. And thanks to some cosmic laws we humans will never have any idea about, you get a return on your effort.

So, long way of saying, I’ve got my first picture hanging gig in Brighton on Friday. Great first client, great house, should be a good one. And a great way to kick off the business down here.

Here’s to many more.

Picture hanging in Brighton has not yet sprouted, though the seeds have been planted via web presence and business cards and speaking to local framers. So in the meantime it’s commuter time – back to London for a month or two of ad agency work it seems. My CV seems pretty popular so shouldn’t be hard to line a few things up.

I’ve also put the London picture hanger live and am putting links out there via directories so hopefully we’ll get that site higher in search results. Not too much competition for the spots so fingers crossed.

Also working on Peter Twigg’s IST site and blog (fifth wave), will link to when live.
